Clear, Diffused, or White? How to Choose the Right Greenhouse Film

Your greenhouse cover is the single biggest climate decision you make. The same structure can run hot and harsh or cool and even, depending on the film over it. Here's how the three main options compare — and how to pick the right one for your crop.

Clear Film — Maximum Light

A clear cover transmits the most light — up to 90% — making it the default for light-hungry crops and northern or winter production. If your limiting factor is light, clear film is where you start. Modern clear films still carry full UV protection (ours are rated for 4 years), and thermic (IR/AC) versions add heat retention at night and anti-condensate drip control.

Diffused Film — Light Everywhere, Not Just on Top

Diffused film scatters incoming sunlight so it reaches lower leaves and shaded corners instead of blasting the top of the canopy. Growers typically see more even growth, less leaf burn, and better working conditions inside the house. A diffusion level around 55% suits most vegetable and floriculture crops. If your plants grow tall or dense, diffusion usually pays for itself.

White Shade Film — Cooling When Heat Is the Enemy

White film reflects part of the solar load, cutting heat while still delivering usable light — a 50–55% shade white film transmits about 45% of light, spread with high diffusion so the house stays evenly lit without hot spots. For warm climates, summer production, and heat-sensitive crops like lettuce and young plants, white shade film is often the difference between a crop that holds and a crop that bolts.

The Rule of Thumb

Short on light? Go clear. Tall or dense canopy? Go diffused. Fighting heat? Go white. And whatever you choose, order it custom cut to your exact width and length — a cover that fits right installs faster and lasts longer.
